Minstrel Banjo at the 2018 Maryland Folk Musicians Retreat

The 2018 Maryland Folk Musicians Retreat will feature a minstrel banjo workshop hosted by Jared Denhard.

Jared sent us this note with a description of the workshop:

Hi Pat-
The Early Banjo Workshop would be an Introduction to stroke style,
discussing similarities and differences from frailing, with
minstrel tuning adapted to modern banjo (gCGBD)
Basic movements from “Briggs Banjo Instructor” (Juba)
2 or 3 easy tunes from early banjo repertoire. (Briggs Corn Shucking Jig, Camptown Hornpipe, Boston Jig)

This looks like a lot of fun! I can’t wait to make music with everybody! Register today at marylandfolk.com or call (410) 968-3873.

Hanging On in a Jam Session

Our friend Diana Wagner will be hosting workshops and jam sessions at the 2018 Maryland Folk Musicians Retreat. If lack of jamming experience has anybody nervous about attending, this workshop is right up your alley!

Hanging On in a Jam Session
Diana Wagner

Workshop description:
Do you ever position yourself in a jam session so you can watch the guitar player across from you? Do you watch people play with ease in a jam and say, “I wish I could do that!”? Do you wonder how everyone seems to know which chord comes next? This workshop is for beginners who want to keep up in a jam session. Participants will gently learn a little music theory and be playing by ear by the end of the session. Strummers and melody players are both welcome. This workshop will give you a toolbox you can use all weekend!

The 2018 Maryland Folk Musicians Retreat is happening on the weekend of June 1-3. Learn more at http://www.marylandfolk.com or call (410) 968-3873.

Current YouTube Top 10

Dear Old Dad and I have ween posting on YouTube since 2006. As of today we have 678 videos available. Dear Old Dad has taken down or deleted a handful of videos filmed when I was fat, sick and nearly dead.

YouTube suggested that we pollute our videos with advertising. We did everything they said and more. In the end it felt like we only generated revenue for YouTube. Because of this we have shut down advertising on our channel.

In lieu of advertising we have set up a Patreon account. A $1.00 contribution will help us continue to teach and share the joy of folk music with the world.

One things we have noticed is that YouTube treats you better if you have a lot of subscribers. We currently haveĀ 13,354. Please click the subscribe button when you are watching one of our videos today. Every click takes us one step closer to being treated better by YouTube.

So what are you watching when you visit our channel? Here are the ten most-watched videos on our YouTube channel over the last 28 days:

I want to barge in here early and point out that videos are a great resource, but it can’t come close to sitting down with other musicians. Come to The Maryland Folk Musicians Retreat and experience music, art and fellowship up close and personal!
