The Book In Progress

I usually write shockingly fast. I wrote The How and the Tao of Old Time Banjo over the space of a raucous caffeine and nicotine fueled weekend.

My current writing project is happening at a much slower pace. Partly due to events in my life over the past year, and partly because the subject matter is more personal. This time around I am writing about the things that happened as I was learning to make music.

As work progresses, I have been posting the rough drafts of each chapter for my Patreon sponsors. While I was having difficulty typing the chapters were handwritten and scanned. Now that I can use a keyboard again, we are finishing up the remaining chapters, going through the drafts and beginning the process of putting the finished work together.

None of this work would see the light of day if it was not for my father. He has been both editor and confidante from time I started talking in general terms of telling this story. I am lucky to have such a friend/

Today we decided to post the rough draft of what will be the first chapter of the book here as well as Patreon to give all of you a peek into this project.

Chapter One: The Guitar Girl

Patreon sponsors have access to the work in progress. It has been a lot of fun writing a book in such an open fashion! When the book is finished, sponsors will get free copies of the full ebook before it goes on sale. Learn more at: https://www.patreon.com/Dobro33H

New Chapter Uploaded!

Patreon sponsors take note, the book is back on track! A new chapter was uploaded today.

From the post on Patreon:

When I started the project, I was unable to type more than a few sentences without passing out. it was interesting from a neurological viewpoint, but it made things impossible for creative work. I am always willing to change how I work to get around a problem, so I started writing this new book by hand.

Reams of paper and worn out pencils later I found myself quitting Suboxone. The withdrawal process was torture, but at the end I was able to type again.

I was not expecting this, but I’ll take it!

My father already transcribed my handwritten work to the computer, so now I am knocking the rough edges from that as well as writing new chapters on the computer.

While work has been slower than I would like, I do think the finished product will be worth the effort. A book of true stories centering around my adventures learning music.

Semi-Social Media

Last year neurological issues made it difficult for me to type.

I handled the situation the way I usually do; I adapted. I dropped off social media and turned my attention to writing. The keyboard was out so I started writing my next book longhand, with paper and pencils.

Now it is 2019. My book is coming close to completion and I have made a little bit of progress with the neurological issues. I think it is safe to dip my toe into the murky water of social media.I Have set up new Facebook and Twitter accounts today. As things progress I will be posting more information on the upcoming book and other cool folk music projects we have in the works.

I am proud of the progress my mom is making with her web site. Be sure to visit misstrudy.com for recipes, craft projects, poetry and her insights into early childhood development.

We have a ton of exciting music and mayhem in the works for the year ahead. I can’t wait to get started!

God bless,
-Patrick

Chapter 14 Is Now Available On Patreon!

As I posted recently, I am writing again! Patreon sponsors can download the PDF:

Typing is still problematic for me, so I am continuing to write the manuscript by hand. I love the feel of a pencil scratching a page. A pot of tea, Pooka on asleep  my lap and I am at peace. Joy!

Now, if you will excuse me, I have to get next weeks Daily Frail workshops ready and get to work on Chapter 15!

Healing

my grandfather's desk

I am finishing up the fourteenth chapter of my book in process.

When Amy died in September I found myself at a loss for words. It wasn’t writers block, it just hurt to remember. When I married Amy I made her my true north. I thought all of the adventures were just steps that led me into her arms. Without her I questioned everything. Lost with a broken compass.

On Monday night I worked with adults getting started on the guitar, while all around me kids were teaching each other ukulele and a young boy learned the basic frailing strum faster than anybody we have ever encountered.

The young banjo student doesn’t have a banjo. His dad is serving in the Navy right now. On the ride home my father and I talked about helping the young man get a banjo of his own. We laughed over some of the trouble I got into when I was the same age, and for the first time in a while the memories did not hurt quite as bad.

I am never going to get over Amy. The good and the bad, the bitter and the sweet, are carved in me all the way down to the bone. I will, however, find a way to keep working. To use the good and the hurt and transform it into words and music as I have always done.

I will have Chapter Fourteen up for our Patreon sponsors soon. Thank you all for your patience.

God bless,
-Patrick

Teatime With Pooka

Oolong tea gongfu style

Unwinding at the end of the day with an exceptionally nice oolong tea. Peaceful right?

Pooka wants some tea!

Intrigued by the sweet scent of the tea, Pooka decided to join me. Uninvited.

In gongfu tea there is a tradition of placing a clay figure on your tea tray. Oxen, frogs, fish – even little human figures. As you perform gonfu tea there is always excess water and tea that needs to be discarded. Some of this excess tea is poured over the tea. They call these sculptures tea pets.

Apparently Pooka is my tea pet.

It all worked out in the end, I put a watered down drop of tea in one of my cups for Pooka. Happy to be part of the goings-on, the cat sat with me quietly as I finished my tea.

By the way, the tea was incredible. I got is from Yunnan Sourcing in China and it is delicious. I am already saving up for my next order.

Happy and with a belly full of wonderful tea, I sat down to write this post. Pooka jumped up and trashed my desk. Torn paper, framed family pictures and writing implements went everywhere. Sigh.

Hulu has a scary movie coming out called Perhaps I named my feline companion a bit too well . . .

I don’t know if anybody has noticed, but I managed to type this post! I don’t type as fast as I used to, but that will come in time. No obstacle is insurmountable.

I have to take things slow, so I will continue working on the book in pencil. I have fallen in love with the feel of the writing implement scratching on paper, the scent of cedar and writing at my grandfather’s desk with Pooka on my lap. Chapter 14 is almost ready for prime time. I will be uploading it for our Patreon Sponsors soon.

Goodnight, and God bless.

Chapter 10 of my book in progress is available for our sponsors to download!

https://www.patreon.com/posts/20801113

As you probably know by now, I am writing this book entirely by hand.

I am writing in pencil on legal pads because a neurological problem has made it difficult for me to type.

This download is a first draft with a quick edit. Dear Old Dad will edit it two more times before transcribing it all into Word.

We are numbering the chapters as they are written. They will probably appear in a different order in the finished book.

Once the book is finished we will make the ebook edition available to all our Patreon sponsors.

In chapter 10 several stories from my past come together to illustrate the importance of core skills.

Before anybody asks, Ed Parker was awesome.
